FAQ: Poultry Equipment Cleaning and Maintenance

Why Equipment Cleaning Matters
Clean equipment is one of the foundations of poultry health. Feeders and drinkers that are not cleaned properly can spread mold, bacteria and disease between birds. Good cleaning habits also make equipment last longer and keep feeding and watering efficient.
General Cleaning Questions
Q1: How often should poultry equipment be cleaned?
Clean drinkers and feeders at least once a week. In hot weather, during disease outbreaks or with large flocks, clean more often. Equipment used for chicks should be checked every day.
Q2: What should I use to clean the equipment?
Use clean water, a soft brush and a poultry-safe detergent. For disinfection, use an approved disinfectant and follow the dilution instructions on the label. Rinse thoroughly after disinfection so no residue is left for the birds.
Q3: Can all plastic equipment be disinfected?
Most plastic poultry equipment can be washed and disinfected. Check the product instructions, and avoid disinfectants that may damage the plastic or leave harmful residue.
Feeder and Drinker Care
Q4: How do I clean a one-piece poultry feeder?
Empty the remaining feed, wash the feeder with water and detergent, scrub the pan and the hopper, rinse and dry it before refilling. One-piece feeders have no loose parts, so cleaning takes only a few minutes.
Q5: How do I clean a bell drinker?
Disconnect the drinker, remove the bell, wash the trough and the bell with water and a brush, flush the inlet and reassemble. Check the seal when putting it back.
Q6: How do I flush a nipple drinker line?
Open the end cap, let clean water run through the line until the water comes out clear, then close it. Clean the filter at the same time. Between flocks, run a disinfectant solution through the line and rinse thoroughly.
Between-Flock Maintenance
Q7: What should I do between flocks?
Remove litter, wash all feeders and drinkers, disinfect the house and the equipment, and let everything dry completely. Replace worn parts such as nipples, seals and feed pans before the new flock arrives.
Q8: How should equipment be stored when not in use?
Clean and dry the equipment, then store it in a dry, covered place. Keep plastic equipment out of direct sunlight for long periods and off the wet ground.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Rinsing without scrubbing, which leaves biofilm on the surfaces.
Using too much disinfectant or the wrong concentration.
Not drying equipment before storage or reuse.
Cleaning the drinkers but forgetting the water line and filter.
Mixing detergents and disinfectants without checking compatibility.
