What Is a Nipple Drinker System
A nipple drinker system is a closed water line that delivers water directly to each bird through small nipple valves. It is one of the most hygienic watering methods for poultry because the water stays inside the pipe and is not exposed to air, litter or droppings. Nipple drinker systems are widely used for broilers, layers, ducks and other poultry kept in floor or cage systems.
Main Components of a Drinking Line
Nipple drinkers - The valves that release water when the bird pecks the pin.
Water line pipe - The pipe that carries water along the house.
Pressure reducing tank - Lowers the water pressure so the nipples do not leak.
Water filter - Removes impurities before water enters the line.
Float valve - Keeps the water level in the header tank stable.
Fittings and hoses - Connect the line to the water supply.
Installation Steps
Start by positioning the water line along the house at the correct height for the birds. Install the pressure reducing tank near the water source, then lay the pipe with the nipple drinkers spaced evenly along it. Connect the filter between the water supply and the line, and fit the end cap on the far end. Open the water supply slowly, adjust the pressure, and test each nipple to make sure water flows when pecked. Raise the line as the birds grow so the nipples stay at chest height.
Water Pressure Settings
Pressure is the most important setting in a nipple drinker system. For day-old chicks, the pressure should be low so water does not drip too fast; for adult birds, slightly higher pressure gives a faster flow. The pressure reducing tank controls this. Check the drippers and the flow rate regularly, because pressure that is too high causes water waste and wet litter, while pressure that is too low reduces water intake.
Cleaning and Flushing the Line
Flush the water line regularly to remove sediment and biofilm. Open the end cap and let clean water run through the line, then close it again. Clean the filter and the pressure tank on the same schedule. Between flocks, disinfect the whole system with an approved disinfectant, rinse it thoroughly, and refill with clean water before the new birds arrive.
Common Problems and Solutions
Leaking nipples - Usually caused by high pressure or worn pins; adjust pressure or replace the nipple.
Blocked nipples - Clean the filter, flush the line, and remove any debris from the pin.
Uneven water flow - Check the line slope, air locks and the pump or header tank level.
Wet litter - Reduce the pressure and check for leaking nipples or damaged pipes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: How many nipple drinkers are needed per bird?
As a general guide, provide one nipple for every 8 to 12 birds, with more nipples during hot weather or for larger birds.
Q2: Can nipple drinkers be used for ducks?
Yes, ducks can learn to use nipple drinkers, although some farmers prefer cup drinkers for ducks to increase water intake.
Q3: How often should the water line be flushed?
Flush weekly during normal use and disinfect between flocks for best hygiene.
